Tips to Keep Your Home Mold Free

Have you ever walked into a home and it smelled musty or felt damp inside? It could be the weather outside, but also mold could be present. Mold can cause serious damage to a home and also cause respiratory issues in humans and pets. Do you know how to check for mold in the home in the Charlotte, NC area?

Here are areas you can be on the lookout for Mold
  1. Carpet

Has there been flooding in the home and the carpet has not dried? Smell the carpet and see if there is a bad odor. Also, look at the carpet on top and underneath to see if there is a presence of mold growth. Sometimes, mold spores can land on the carpet and can develop into a mold that is black, brown, or green. One suggestion is to avoid carpet in bathrooms, as mold likes to grow in those areas.

  2. Bathroom

When you shower, do you turn on the exhaust fan? It is a good idea to do this as the mold grows in high humidity areas. Dampness and condensation are prevalent in bathrooms and since there is usually no window, it is difficult to air it out. Ideas are to leave the bathroom door open after showering to allow fresh air in to dry it out. Check your shower curtain for mold and clean it with a detergent. Also, make sure you are cleaning the tile in the bathroom and checking for mold on the tile. There are great mold removal products on the market that allow you to clean it yourself and save money.

  3. Basements

    - Many houses in the Charlotte, NC area have basements. This is a breeding ground for mold as it is often damp, where pipes usually leak, and water can come in. Avoid carpet in this area for these reasons as well as it can be humid too. Adding a dehumidifier to this area can help keep it dry and comfortable. An air conditioner can also help dry out this area as well.

  4. Moisture Intrusion

    - Any area of your home that is causing moisture intrusion can lead into a mold issue. There is mold everywhere and with a surplus of moisture (a roof leak for instance) and an abundance of food (ex. dust), mold can grow out of control.

Recommendations from the CDC (Center for Disease Control)

As mentioned above, humidity can be a big factor in the creation of mold. The CDC recommends keeping humidity levels low all day, between 30-50%. Ventilation is key to keeping a home mold-free as well as running the air conditioner during the summer months. Staying on top of leaks and taking care of the roof and pipes is essential.

If there is a flood in the home or water leaks, clean up the area within 24-48 hours. If the carpets cannot be dried or are soaked, remove them right away if the dehumidifier or air conditioner don’t dry them out. Also, clean the wood and use the dehumidifier and air conditioner to help.

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold, make sure you are in a well-ventilated area, wear protective eyewear, and use non-porous gloves. Mold removal can be done, but it can take a while. When in doubt, always ask a professional. Mold can turn into a more serious issue if not cleaned properly.
